Root Cause Analysis Methodology in an Enhanced Business Management System: Description and Webinar

Organizations benefit when a root cause analysis methodology becomes an integral component of an enhanced overall Integrated Enterprise Excellence (IEE) Business Management System. With an IEE approach, root cause analysis methodology techniques can be used to address not only issues locally but enterprise-as-a-whole issues as well.

Root Cause Analysis Methodology in an Enhanced Business Management System: Description

The enhanced business management system of IEE consists of nine steps:

root cause analysis methodology in IEE system

In step 2, an IEE value chain is created which describes what an organization does an how it measures what is done.  An example IEE value chain is:

root cause analysis methodology can be used to address special causes in IEE value chain

With Enterprise Performance Reporting System (EPRS) software, an IEE value chain can have clickable drill downs where:

  • Rectangles designate processes. Boxes connected by an arrow are the primary functions of the organization and those not connected are support functions.
  • Oblong symbols designate 30,000-foot-level predictive metrics.

An example 30,000-foot-level report for a process response that has specification limits of 95 and 105 is:

root cause analysis methodology need for resolving special cause event

This chart indicates that there was a special cause event for week ending 12/1/2018 and a common-cause non-conformance rate of about 29.8% (special cause event removed from calculation).

Given this 30,000-foot-level report-out, what might be done?

  • The common-cause non-conformance rate could be addressed through a lean Six Sigma DMAIC roadmap or other process improvement technique.
  • The special-cause event on 12/1/2018 may need to be addressed using a root cause analysis methodology, as described in the recorded webinar below (no sign in required to access the webinar).

The Lean Six Sigma tool set is not very efficient in addressing root cause identification for an single event (special-cause event) or problem.  The lean Six Sigma tool set works best to address chronic (common-cause problem) issues. That should not imply that there are not Lean Six Sigma tools that can be used to support a root cause analysis or corrective action effort.

This webinar show how to use a set of lean Six Sigma tools that can be applied to root cause analysis efforts.  These tools may seem familiar to an Root Cause Analysis (RCA) practitioner but the tools can have different names in lean Six Sigma.

This webinar will work through a general corrective action event and show how the lean Six Sigma practitioner can use their skills to quickly determine the root causes in a method that everyone will understand. Take-aways from this session are:

  • Identify the Lean Six Sigma Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) tools that are beneficial in a RCA
  • Describe how the use of the DMAIC tools to overcome one of the great weaknesses in RCA.
